Dr Ganesh Govindan is an Indian martial arts Grandmaster based in Bangalore, Karnataka. He is the founder of the martial arts style KAKUDO and the Co-Founder, alongside his wife, of Nirbhaya Self Defence, an initiative dedicated to training women and children across India in self-defence.

Early Life

Dr Ganesh Govindan was born on 12 October 1964 and was raised in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He began his martial arts journey at the age of 10 under the guidance of Grandmaster B. M. Narasimhan, developing a passion for martial arts that would go on to shape the course of his life.

From an early age, his dedication and discipline were evident. Competing in various state-level tournaments, he consistently won gold medals, and as captain of the Bangalore B Team, he led his squad to numerous victories, establishing his reputation as both a skilled competitor and a natural leader.

Career

In 1986, Dr Ganesh Govindan earned his first Black Belt, marking his transition from student to mentor. He began teaching martial arts to a small group of students from the terrace of his house and the HAL Officers Enclave, laying the foundation for his teaching legacy.

In 1991, he was married. His passion for martial arts continued alongside his personal life, and following the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi in 2012, he and his wife were moved to co-found Nirbhaya Self Defence, with his wife as Founder and himself as Co-Founder, with the mission of training women and children across India in self-defence.

This initiative led to the establishment of the Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy, an institution focused on martial arts training and societal change. Dr Ganesh Govindan extended his training programmes to schools, colleges, banks, and corporate organisations, reaching thousands of individuals across various communities.

In 2015, he participated in the First International Martial Arts Games held in Mumbai, where he secured a Silver Medal. In various subsequent online martial arts competitions, he won Gold Medals in both the Bare-Hand Routine and Weapon Routine categories. From 2017 onward, he received increasing recognition from organisations across India and abroad.

Dr Ganesh Govindan holds the following martial arts ranks and titles:

  • 8th Dan Black Belt, awarded by the Karate India Organization
