Ganesh Govindan is an Indian martial arts and self defence coach based in Bangalore. He is known for his dedication to training women and children in self-defence and for founding the NIR-Bhaya Self Defence initiative and the Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy.

Career

Ganesh Govindan began his martial arts journey at the age of 10 under the guidance of Grandmaster B. M. Narasimhan in Bangalore. He competed in various state-level tournaments, winning multiple gold medals and serving as captain of the Bangalore B Team. In 1986, he earned his first Black Belt and started teaching martial arts to students from his home and the HAL Officers Enclave.

In 2012, motivated by the Nirbhaya incident, Ganesh and his wife co-founded NIR-Bhaya Self Defence to empower women and children across India through self-defence training. This led to the establishment of the Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy, which expanded its programs to schools, colleges, banks, and corporate organizations.

Ganesh has competed internationally, winning a Silver Medal at the First International Martial Arts Games in Mumbai in 2015, and gold medals in online martial arts competitions for Bare-Hand and Weapon Routines. He holds high martial ranks including 8th Dan Black Belt from the Karate India Organization and 6th Dan Black Belt in South Shaolin Kungfu. He is also the Grandmaster and founder of the martial arts style KAKUDO.

Achievements

Ganesh Govindan has received several awards recognizing his contributions to martial arts and society, including the Jayalalithaa Award, Buddha Bodhidharma Award, Buddha Yoga Award, International Martial Arts Hall of Fame (2019–2025), Honorary Doctorate from the World Human Rights Protection Commission, Bharat Vibhushan Award, and Bharat Bhushan National Award.

Legacy

Ganesh attributes his success to his parents and mentors Grandmaster B. M. Narasimhan, Mr. Ravi Naik, and Sifu Gajanand Rajput. Known for his honesty, humility, and commitment to social good, he continues to inspire future generations through his teaching and social initiatives.
