Early Life and Musical Training
Born in Kolkata, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya began musical training at age three under his parents, accomplished vocalists Sunil Kumar and Manjushree Bhattacharya. He studied with Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra and Padmabhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. By age four, he was performing publicly, trained in vocal music, tabla, sitar, and other instruments. His rigorous training in Hindustani classical music enabled him to develop a unique vocal style (Gayaki Ang) on the slide guitar. He won the All India Radio National Music Competition at 21, receiving the President of India Gold Medal in 1984.
Career
Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya has performed over 3,000 concerts, festivals, and masterclasses across six continents. He is a two-time Grammy Award nominee and received the BBC World Music Award (BBC Planet Award) in 2007. In 2022, he was inducted into the World Music Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement. He has also received the 2016 Songlines Music Award and the 2005 Asiatic Society Gold Medal, and is an Empanelled Artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Government of India. His work has reached the Billboard Top 10, the Songlines Magazine Top 10, the Central Asia and Asia Pacific World Music Top 10, and the Amazon Top 100 Albums.
He invented and patented the Trinity of Indian Slide Guitars—Chaturangui, Gandharvi, and Anandi—and the Pushpa Veena, expanding the instrument's possibilities. He created the first structured Hindustani Slide Guitar syllabus and founded the School of Universal Music (Guitar Gurukul). He has released 29 commercial albums, some featured on the Billboard World Music Charts, and collaborated with artists such as John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Jerry Douglas, and Derek Trucks. He has also performed for Pandit Ravi Shankar and at numerous Indian music festivals. His latest album, "Legacy," is his 29th release, featuring Debashish and family in a tribute to the pioneering artists of Hindustani classical music. Trideb International Guitar
Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya has designed a range of handcrafted guitars manufactured in India under the name Trideb International Guitar, including the Chaturangui (Professional and Collector's Models), Anandi, Pushpa Veena, and a four-string slide ukulele. The Chaturangui features six melody strings, two drones, two chikaris, and 12 to 14 sympathetic strings, with the name derived from the Sanskrit "chatur" (four), "ang" (attribute or color), and "gui" (from guitar).
Teaching
Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya offers instruction in Hindustani classical slide guitar, available in person or online, ranging from group classes to individual instruction and traditional in-residence guru-student mentoring, including group lessons in Kolkata and teaching in Amsterdam. A number of his classical students have gone on to become "A grade" artists recognized by the Government of India, with successful performance careers.
Legacy and Successors
Through his School of Universal Music and Guitar Gurukul, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya has taught numerous slide guitarists worldwide. His daughter Anandi Bhattacharya is an acclaimed singer, composer, and librettist, while his son Suryadipta Bhattacharya is a young musician and slide guitarist continuing his father's legacy.
