Ganesh Govindan
Ganesh Govindan is an Indian martial arts and self defence coach based in Bangalore, Karnataka. He is known for his dedication to training women and children in self-defence, for founding the NIR-Bhaya Self Defence initiative and the Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy, and for founding the martial arts style KAKUDO.
Early Life
Ganesh Govindan was born on 12 October 1964 and was raised in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He began his martial arts journey at the age of 10 under the guidance of Grandmaster B. M. Narasimhan, developing a passion for martial arts that would go on to shape the course of his life.
From an early age, his dedication and discipline were evident. Competing in various state-level tournaments, he consistently won gold medals, and as captain of the Bangalore B Team, he led his squad to numerous victories, establishing his reputation as both a skilled competitor and a natural leader.
Career
In 1986, Ganesh Govindan earned his first Black Belt, marking his transition from student to mentor. He began teaching martial arts to a small group of students from the terrace of his house and the HAL Officers Enclave, laying the foundation for his teaching legacy.
In 1991, he was married. His passion for martial arts continued alongside his personal life, and following the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi in 2012, he and his wife were moved to co-found NIR-Bhaya Self Defence, with his wife as Founder and himself as Co-Founder, with the mission of training women and children across India in self-defence.
This initiative led to the establishment of the Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy, an institution focused on martial arts training and societal change. Ganesh Govindan extended his training programmes to schools, colleges, banks, and corporate organisations, reaching thousands of individuals across various communities.
In 2015, he participated in the First International Martial Arts Games held in Mumbai, where he secured a Silver Medal. In various subsequent online martial arts competitions, he won Gold Medals in both the Bare-Hand Routine and Weapon Routine categories. From 2017 onward, he received increasing recognition from organisations across India and abroad.

- Bharat Bhushan National Award, conferred by the Anti-Harassment Foundation
He also won a Silver Medal at the First International Martial Arts Games, Mumbai (2015), and Gold Medals in the Bare-Hand Routine and Weapon Routine categories in subsequent online martial arts competitions.
Philanthropy
Following the 2012 Nirbhaya incident in Delhi, Ganesh Govindan co-founded NIR-Bhaya Self Defence with his wife, with a mission to train women and children across India in self-defence. Through the associated Nirbhaya Martial Arts Academy, he has extended self-defence training programmes to schools, colleges, banks, and corporate organisations, reaching thousands of individuals.
Personal Life
Ganesh Govindan married in 1991. He attributes his success to his parents, whose values shaped his discipline, and credits his mentors Grandmaster B. M. Narasimhan, Mr. Ravi Naik, and Sifu Gajanand Rajput for their role in shaping his philosophy and career. Known for his honesty, humility, and commitment to social good, he continues to inspire future generations through his teaching and social initiatives.
