ELIZA CHAKRABORTY
Eliza Chakraborty is an Indian professor of biotechnology and biomedical scientist known for her extensive research in stem cell technology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and cancer stem cell targeted drug discovery. She has 27 years of experience, including 10 years in the USA, and has contributed significantly to biomedical sciences, serving as Professor of Biotechnology and Head of the DST-FIST Center at Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
Education
Eliza Chakraborty completed her PhD at the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) in Lucknow, India. She also pursued postdoctoral research in both the USA and India, gaining international experience in biomedical sciences.
Career
Eliza Chakraborty has served as faculty at the Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She was the Head of the DST-FIST Centre from 2019 to 2024 and has been a professor of biotechnology from 2013 to 2025, with 27 years of overall professional experience, including 10 years in the USA. She currently serves as Professor of Biotechnology and Head of Department (HOD), DST-FIST Center, at Meerut Institute of Engineering and Technology, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, and is the founder and head of the DST-FIST Centre, Medical Translational Biotechnology Lab, and Stem cell & cancer cell culture lab.
She introduced Stemformatic in India in 2016 at the Science Congress. She also pioneered the introduction of Biosafety Level 2 laboratories in semi-urban areas of India. Her research areas include stem cell technology, biomaterials and tissue engineering, cancer stem cell targeted drug discovery, alternative native animal model development, and infectious diseases. Her infectious disease research has been sponsored by WHO, ICMR India, and NIH USA.
Eliza Chakraborty has overseen outcomes-based student projects and provided senior student mentorship.
She holds four granted patents and has eight patents published or pending.
She is a life member of the Indian Science Congress and the Indian Academy of Biomedical Science (IABS). She served as an executive board member of IABS from 2019 to 2024 and was a national advisory board member of IABS from 2020 to 2022.

Eliza Chakraborty is a recipient of national awards recognizing her contributions to biotechnology and biomedical sciences, including:
- Best Educationist Award (Certificate of Excellence) – conferred by the KTK Outstanding Achievers and Education Foundation on 18 September 2022, in New Delhi, in recognition of her outstanding achievements and contribution in the field of Biomedical Sciences, signed by Major Yashpal Singh (Retd.), Chairman, KTK Outstanding Achievers and Education Foundation.
- Bharat Gaurav Puraskar – conferred by the KTK Outstanding Achievers and Education Foundation on 24 July 2022, in New Delhi, in recognition of her outstanding achievements and contribution in the field of Biomedical Sciences.
